중국 만리장성을 직접 경험하기 전까지는 이 압도적인 구조물의 엄청난 규모를 실감하기 어렵습니다. 산비탈을 따라 구불구불 이어지는 모습은 마치 끝이 없는 듯합니다. 이 구간에 도착했을 때, 나는 한 걸음 물러서야 했습니다. 머리 위로 어두운 구름이 드리워져 믿을 수 없을 정도로 섬뜩한 분위기가 감돌았습니다. 마치 신비로운 성이 분위기를 조성하는 오래된 영화처럼 말이죠. 나는 렌즈를 조정하여 앞에 펼쳐진 길이 길게 느껴지도록 했고, 돌로 된 건물이 웅장한 최종 목적지처럼 다가오게 했습니다. 흑백 톤은 장면에 깊이를 더해 벽돌과 숲 사이에 훌륭한 대비를 제공합니다. 이 사진은 항상 만리장성의 강력한 존재감을 떠올리게 합니다. 오늘날까지도 내게 남아 있는 경외심을 불러일으키는 느낌입니다.
I hung this print above my desk and keep catching myself staring at how the wall snakes along the mountain ridge—the detail really captures the way it stretches endlessly. It makes me feel like I'm actually standing there.
The scale of this thing genuinely doesn't translate in photos — you have to stand on it and watch it disappear over the mountains in both directions. I spent an hour just walking one section near Beijing, and it still felt unreal.
Seeing how it snakes along the ridgeline in person is completely different from any photo I'd seen. The hike up was steeper than I expected, so wear decent shoes, but the views from the towers are worth every step.
