In December 2023, HARMAN launched its first ever color film Phoenix 200, crafted entirely at their Mobberley, UK factory. True to their word, the HARMAN team has spent the months since collecting feedback from the community and further developing and optimizing their color film formula.

Now, HARMAN Phoenix II 35mm rises. Each layer and component has been redesigned and reengineered: new dyes, couplers and layer construction. The result is noticeably finer grain, better color reproduction, controlled contrast, increased sharpness, and a wider dynamic range — all making Phoenix II easier to shoot, as well as easier to scan.

Shot the whole roll on a grey afternoon and the colors still popped with that warm, slightly retro feel I was hoping for. Grain is noticeable but pleasing, not mushy, and it pushed shadows really nicely at box speed. Loved that it's made in the UK too, gives the whole roll a bit of character.

The skin tones came out with a lovely warm cast, and the grain is present but not overpowering—exactly what I wanted for moody autumn street shots. Knowing it’s made entirely in the UK factory adds a nice touch, and the colors feel genuinely distinct from the usual mass-produced stocks.

Shot this roll on a bright afternoon and the grain structure is honestly gorgeous up close, with a warm palette that makes skin tones look natural without much fuss. It's a real treat to have a color negative stock made start-to-finish in the UK, and the exposure latitude saved a few frames I though
