Las Vegas, Nevada
While shooting the Vegas city skyline from the rooftop of the Rio Hotel, I was distracted by the gently flapping flag above my head. In a spontaneous decision, I decided to create an image that would depict this ultimate symbol of patriotism high above the city streets. To strengthen the bold composition, I filled the entire frame with the flag and used a long exposure to enhance the feeling of movement. The combination of the exposure along with a fast film enabled me to create a painterly feel to the shot.

I hung this above my desk and the flapping flag in the foreground gives it so much more life than a plain skyline shot. The Vegas lights in the background still come through crisp, and I notice something new in it every week.

Penelope X. ★★★★★

The rooftop angle at the Rio caught the flag mid-flap above the skyline, and the way that motion plays against the neon backdrop is what sold me. Hung it in my hallway and it's the first thing guests ask about.

I wasn't expecting much from a photo print, but the composition with the flag against the skyline is genuinely striking—it captures that spontaneous rooftop moment perfectly. The clarity and color on the paper make it feel like you're standing back up there on the Rio.
