Paul Newman, Burbank, CA, 1958

I’ve framed this photo in my study and the way the silver gelatin print catches the light makes Newman’s thoughtful expression and cigar smoke feel incredibly immediate. The warm tones perfectly capture that quiet Hollywood backlot moment.

That shot of Newman relaxing between takes captures such a genuine moment — the way he's holding the cigar while reading feels almost voyeuristic. I've stared at it several times already and notice something new each time.

I framed it above my desk and the candid moment feels so unposed it's like peeking into a quiet break on set. The film grain and shadow detail bring out that relaxed, mid-read expression perfectly.
